| In order to determine the occurrence of transplacentary transmission of Theileria equi in equine neonates, 50 foals of the Lusitano breed, both colts and fillies, along with their respective mothers were evaluated shortly after parturition. Total blood samples were collected from the mothers and the neonates within the first five hours after parturition for the detection of Theileria equi, through use of the RT-PCR technique. The detection kit based on the intercalating dye of DNA SYBERgreen was used. A total of 46% of the mares presented a positive result for Theileria equi and 54% presented negative ones, while 66% of the foals presented positive results, seeing as 73.9% of them were born from also positive mothers.
